DUI AND SR-22 INSURANCE IN COLORADO

For people who are arrested for a DUI, DWAI or other alcohol related driving offense, the Colorado DMV will require you to get an SR-22. You will need proof of this SR-22 in order to get your driver’s license reinstated. So what is this SR-22?

The SR-22 is a form of insurance which requires the insurance carrier to report any lapse of insurance coverage to the Colorado DMV. The driver must keep and pay for this SR-22 for a period of time equal to the duration of the revocation or longer if the person reinstates early or was involved in the vehicle accident.

Think of an SR-22 as proof of insurance. After you get your license revoked, the Colorado will require additional proof that you have and will maintain automobile insurance despite the fact that you may suddenly become a greater risk. The SR-22 is a certificate that verifies to DMV offices in Denver and elsewhere in Colorado that you have auto insurance liability coverage after a driver’s license has been suspended or revoked.

Basically, the insurance company gives the state that it will notice DMV if there is a cancelation of coverage for any event including failure to pay the premium.

How Expensive is SR-22 Coverage?

Whether coverage is expense depends on your budget and your point of view. Rates depend on the make and model of the vehicle and your driving record. The best bet is to contact your insurance company and several other insurance companies to obtain a quote. But you also need to know that getting an SR-22 is a “red flag” to your insurance provider that you have problems with your driving history and are now a high risk loss. Once your insurance company finds out about the SR-22 request, they could increase your insurance premiums. For people who need to drive, this is a risk worth taking, however.

How Long Will You Need The Carry SR-22?

Colorado will require you to carry SR-22 typically for up to three years. After these three years, your SR-22 will expire. However, if you cancel your police before the time period runs out, the insurance company will contact the DMV and you risk losing your driver’s license. If you need SR-22 call your insurance carrier.
