A 72-year-old man, John Guyette, who had been a financial advisor in Greeley, has recently been convicted on 15 counts of securities fraud. According to the police report and court documents associated with this case, between August and December 2008, Guyette had cajoled 14 investors into investing more than $1 million into a company known as Medical Capital Holdings, assuring these investors that they were making a safe investment. However, despite his claims to investors, Guyette had allegedly known that the company was having serious problems; in fact, the company eventually failed in the spring of 2009.

Securities fraud, which is also known as investor fraud or stock fraud, is a serious criminal offense that is typically prosecuted by federal authorities, as it was in this case. Although Guyette is currently awaiting sentencing in this case, he will likely be facing some combination of extensive prison time (in a federal penitentiary), expensive fines and loss of his professional license(s). Despite his recent conviction in this securities fraud case, Guyette still maintains his innocence and has stated that he and his lawyers plan to appeal the jury’s guilty verdict.
