A 57-year-old school bus driver who was formerly employed by Mountain Range High School in Adams County has recently plead guilty to DUI and child abuse in exchange for the prosecutor dropping numerous other serious charges against him. According to the police report and court documents associated with this case, on September 21, 2013, the man had been driving a school bus full of freshman football players back from a game at the nearby Prairie View High School when he ran into a parked car.
When police arrived at the scene of the accident, they reportedly witnessed the driver displaying obvious signs of intoxication (including slurring his words and having bloodshot eyes). They requested that he submit to field sobriety testing and, subsequently, to either breath or blood test to check his BAC (blood alcohol content). The results of the BAC testing revealed that the driver had a BAC of 0.213 – nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08.
The driver was then arrested and faced numerous criminal charges, including charges of:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol
- Reckless endangerment
- Careless driving
- Failing to drive in a single lane of traffic
- Failing to stop at a railroad crossing
- 37 counts of child abuse.
As part of the terms of the plea deal in this case, the defendant agreed to plead guilty to the DUI and one count of child abuse in exchange for the district attorney dropping the other charges against him.
Currently, the defendant is free on a $4,000 bond, and the sentencing phase of this case is scheduled to get underway this Friday at 1:30 pm in the Adams County Courthouse.
